The inspiration for our new business’ name
I love playing with words. I like to tell stories. I am a visual person. So when my husband, Mike, and I started to seriously consider our marzipan idea becoming a business we had to give the baby a name. One that meant something – to us and to you. Our marzipan represents the traditions of our homeland, Germany, in combination with what we love about our new home. Living on PEI, with the ocean surrounding us, we were naturally inspired by all things associated with the sea.
Marzipan is a very moldable product. In fact, in Germany it comes in every imaginable shape and form – from any kind of fruit to the classic marzipan potato to the good luck pig for New Year’s. So marzipan shells, fish, lobsters and lighthouses made perfect sense to us.
And that’s how the name Maritime Marzipan was born (a little literary trivia: it’s an alliteration and tautogram).
While I have a background in marketing and Mike builds websites, neither of us is a graphic designer. Help was needed to create our logo. Logo design can be a sensitive and personal thing, so we wanted to hire someone we trust and whose work we cherish. Our friend, Sienna Skelton, who we knew from our years living in Toronto, was just the person. We had seen her wonderful work before so we asked her if she would take our little project on. Lucky for us she said yes without hesitation.
We shared some thoughts about the concept with Sienna and she simply got us. A mere two weeks later we had the first drafts in our hand and they were gorgeous. One or two tweaks later our ‘Seal of Sweetness’ was perfected and our Maritime Marzipan brand born.
Let us know what you think of our logo! Find us on Facebook and Instagram, email us at info@maritimemarzipan.com, and follow along with our business adventures at saltyisland.com.
Also, our official launch will be at the Victorian Christmas Market in downtown Charlottetown November 24th to 26th. Hope to see you there!
