As part of the response and recovery efforts following Hurricane Dorian, more help is available to Islanders who need it through Island food banks.
Island food banks will provide immediate food relief to Islanders, particularly the most vulnerable, who lost power and may be relying on the support of food banks in the interim.
“I’m so glad that our network of food banks will be able to help people across the province with their most urgent food needs by working together with provincial government,” Mike MacDonald, executive director of PEI Food Banks, said.
Island food banks received $50,000 in provincial government funding to help Islanders with their most urgent food needs. “Hurricane Dorian is causing wide-spread challenges for Islanders and recovery from that will take time. All Islanders have come together to help their neighbours and friends and we need to continue to support those in need so that we are all healthy and safe.” Ernie Hudson, Minister of Social Development and Housing, said in a press release.
The Chief Public Health Office and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have advised that foods can become a health and public safety concern during power outages and Islanders should be aware of when food is safe to keep and consume.
“Islanders have been exceptional at taking care of one another during the initial days of this devastating storm,” said Bloyce Thompson, Minister of Justice and Public Safety. “It is important that Islanders not take the risk of consuming spoiled foods as food safety is a very important part of the storm recovery.”
Government also recognizes and thanks all first responders, law enforcement agencies, community partners and Islanders who have taken swift action to support the recovery efforts and to help each other.
On September 12th, 2019, 20 PEI Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from all three major parties toured through three Island family farms. Arranged by the PEI Federation of Agriculture and Farm & Food Care PEI the three farms included: Blue Bay Farms Ltd. (potatoes), Crasdale Farm Inc. (dairy), and Atlantic Grown Organics (organic greenhouse). The tour also included lunch at The Mill in New Glasgow where industry presentations were given. The tour provided an opportunity for Island MLAs to learn about and discuss issues of importance in the agriculture and food industry on PEI. It gave the elected officials the chance to see first-hand what the agriculture industry looks like on the Island and the innovative investments farmers are making to stay competitive and viable in today’s economy.
In case you can’t make it to their taprooms, you can now find some new local brews on the shelves at your local PEILCC. Montague’s latest brewery, Bogside Brewing, has its canned product out for sale and Charlottetown’s Red Island Cider got its Father Walker’s product in select stores last month.
The PEI Department of Agriculture and Land is looking for volunteer farms for a PEI Manure Nutrient Analysis survey, where manure samples will be collected from volunteer farms and analyzed for their nutrient content. Farms that will be chosen for manure sampling will be based on criteria necessary for statistical representation. An initial survey to determine participating farms is being conducted by the PEI Department of Agriculture and Land and can be filled out online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZD2XKCJ.
Lee Clarke, owner of Plate It., was badly injured in an accident in mid-September when his delivery van caught some gravel on the road in Tracadie. His van left the road, rolled, and ended up in the woods. Some of the injuries he sustained included multiple broken bones, and will take months to recover from.
Plate It. is a wholesale delivery service that caters to Islanders and Island restaurants, and features fresh quality ingredients, responsibly grown or foraged on Prince Edward Island by small farms and foragers. In operation for nearly a decade, offering chefs on PEI access to local ingredients is the hallmark of Clarke’s business.
Recently Clarke partnered with Jordan MacPhee to open Green Fork in Founders’ Food Hall and Market. MacPhee has set up a GoFundMe page to help Clarke out as he recovers from his injuries. Funds raised will go towards a new van, assistance to run the business while Clarke recovers, and financial assistance for Clarke’s physical recovery from his injuries.
Clarke stated on the Plate It. Facebook page, “I can’t wait to be back where I belong, helping restaurants showcase the best organic produce from our amazing Island farmers!”

It’s that time of year when many restaurants close for the winter season. Make sure you check online before heading out to your favourites, as they may not be open. A few that we are aware of in Charlottetown include some along the waterfront like Nimrods’, and Salt and Sol, however The Cork and Cast plans to remain open until mid-October. Pho Hung is also closed temporarily due to family business, according to a sign on their Queen St door. You can always check out the food vendors that opened last month in Founders’ Food Hall and Market; they include Famous Peppers, Stir It Up!, Big Burger, Holy Fox, Rawsome, Doughnuts by Design, Founders’ Delicatessen, Maritime Madness, Green Fork Local Foods, Maritime Marzipan, Truckin’ Roll, Upstreet, Rising Tide Oyster Bar, Receiver Coffee, and Matos Winery. In Summerside, the Sunset Room at The Shipyard has closed for the season, along with the waterfront locations of both Glow Juicery, and Uncle Mike’s Grill. In other restaurant news, The Sidewalk Grill in Alberton hopes to reopen this month.
