Montague brewery launches product in liquor stores

You certainly can’t accuse the brains behind Copper Bottom Brewing of not planning ahead.

Just before opening last November, Ken Spears and Ashley Condon bought a canning system from Nova Scotia’s Tatamagouche Brewing. In May, a mere seven months later, the brewery released its first canned products.

473 ml cans of Centennial Stock Ale (4.9% abv), Broadside APA (5.9% abv), and Rabble Rouser Red are available in the brewery taproom and at liquor stores in Montague, Oak Tree (Charlottetown), and West Royalty, with plans for further expansion later this year.

“We wanted to ensure that we ironed out any kinks in productions before canning our product,” co-owner and brewer Spears said.

Spears said he spent a couple of weeks canning, getting systems in place, and building some inventory.
“We can put out somewhere around 5000 cans per week,” he said. “Expansion would certainly help throughput. More tanks will be the short-term solution to help meet the market demand.”

The company distributes kegs to more than a dozen restaurants and bars across Prince Edward Island, and recently their Broadside APA placed first in the Pale Ale Category at the Down East Brewing Awards in Fredericton.
