Good Food on the Go

Nabuur’s Gardens expands to include bakery and retail store with Jana Furness at the helm

Timing is everything in life they say. And for Arnie and Mary Nabuurs and Jana Furness, the timing worked out perfectly to come together in a business venture. The long-time owners and operators of Nabuur’s Gardens have partnered with Furness to open an on-site bakery and retail marketplace alongside their garden store and farm market in Montague.

After months of renovation and planning, the 55- by 20-foot space that was once a breezeway is now open as a retail and take-out marketplace. Equipped with fridges, counters, and freezers full of fresh and prepared produce and meals, customers can check out the shop seven days of the week.

With over 35 years of experience in the farmers’ market and gardening business, the Nabuurs are excited to be working with Furness, former owner/operator of The Juice Box Café in Montague. With a focus on clean, fresh, and locally-sourced ingredients, the new bakery and retail marketplace will be stocked with sourdough, multigrain, and carrot spelt loaves; fresh berry pies, salads, sandwiches, dips, and other edible products from local food producers. Customers will also be able to pick up seedlings, planters, shrubs, and other gardening needs at the garden centre located at the back of the farmer’s market building.

“Everything will be prepped and ready to go for the customer. We will also be selling wraps and gazpacho soup for anyone looking for a quick lunch or meal to go in the middle of the day,” Furness said.

From chopped and ready-to-grill veggies to made-from-scratch baked goods, this new market is destined to be a local favourite. The trio are excited to be working together and look forward to offering their community garden-fresh and soul-satisfying food. Yes, this means fresh shortbread biscuits topped with Nabuurs’ juicy, red, and oh-so-delicious strawberries. All you need is the whipped cream.
